Law Firm Review Request Generator

Short answer: most firms ask for reviews too late, in one generic email, and get nothing. This writes the text and the email for your practice area, timed to the specific moment the client is happiest, plus what to do when they say yes and when they go quiet.

Your firm and the moment

The moment matters more than the wording. Pick the one closest to what just happened.

Takes a few seconds.

Before you send anything: never offer a discount, gift card, fee reduction or anything else of value in exchange for a review. That breaches Google’s policies and, more importantly, the professional conduct rules in most states. Check your own state bar’s advertising and solicitation rules — a few restrict client testimonials outright.

Questions

When is the best time to ask a client for a review?

Within a day or two of the moment the client felt relief — an approval, a settlement, good news landing. Asking weeks later, when the feeling has faded and life has moved on, is the single most common reason firms get no reviews.

Can a law firm ask clients for Google reviews?

Asking is generally fine. Offering anything of value in exchange is not, under both Google’s policies and the professional conduct rules in most states. Never offer a discount, a gift card or a fee reduction for a review, and check your own state bar’s advertising rules.

Should I send a review request by text or email?

Text gets read and answered far more often, and it works because the link is one tap from the phone the client already has in their hand. Email is the better choice where you need a longer explanation or the client has only ever dealt with you that way.

What do I do about a negative review?

Respond publicly, briefly, without confirming that the person was a client — confidentiality still applies and a defensive reply that reveals case details is far more damaging than the review. Then take the actual conversation offline.

How many reviews does a law firm need?

Enough that the most recent one is recent. A steady trickle beats a burst, both for how prospects read your profile and for local search — a firm with forty reviews where the newest is two years old reads worse than one with fifteen from this year.
